Lawyers of the Dhaka Bar Association have announced their decision not to represent Sohail Rana, the prime accused in the case filed over the rape and murder of child Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, Mirpur, Dhaka.

This decision was made at an executive committee meeting of the Dhaka Bar Association held on Friday (May 22). Advocate Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan, president of the organization, confirmed the matter.

He stated that the decision not to handle the case on behalf of the accused in such a brutal incident was taken from a humanitarian perspective. In his view, this decision will send a strong message to criminals that no one will escape justice by committing heinous crimes and receiving legal aid.

However, he added that the court could appoint a state-funded lawyer for the accused if it deems necessary.

Meanwhile, Shishir Monir, a senior Supreme Court lawyer and a member of Jamaat-e-Islami’s executive council, has announced his intention to fight the legal battle on behalf of child Ramisa’s family in this case. He stated on social media that he would manage the case for the family.

It is noteworthy that on Tuesday (May 19), Ramisa’s headless body was recovered from a flat in Pallabi, and her severed head was later found in the bathroom. A murder case was filed at Pallabi Police Station regarding the incident.

Following this, police initially detained Sohail’s wife, Swapna Akter, and later arrested the prime accused, Sohail Rana. He has also confessed to the rape and murder in court.

Meanwhile, widespread anger and protests continue across the country surrounding the incident. People from various walks of life are holding demonstrations and human chains, demanding swift justice and maximum punishment.
