The United States and Iran are reportedly close to reaching an understanding to extend their ongoing ceasefire by another 60 days. Concurrently, efforts are underway to establish a framework for discussions regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, according to international media outlet Financial Times (FT).

News agency Reuters reported this information on Saturday (May 23), citing multiple sources involved in the discussions.

The Financial Times report indicates that the potential understanding might include the gradual reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Discussions are also ongoing regarding diluting Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile or transferring it elsewhere.

Furthermore, the report mentions potential discussions on Washington easing its blockade of Iranian ports and taking steps to lift some sanctions.

However, no final agreement has been officially announced yet. Neither the United States nor Iran has publicly commented in detail on the progress of the discussions.

According to analysts, a prolonged ceasefire could potentially de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and pave the way for new diplomatic progress on the nuclear issue.
